Career Connection
Career Connection offers a continuum of services for transition students (ages 18-22) and adults with disabilities, and for employers who are interested in hiring individuals who experience a disability. Services are customized to individual need.
Career Connection Services
Work skills and aptitudes are assessed in local businesses that offer employment in the job seeker's interest area. CBAs may be from one to four weeks in length based upon occupational interests, needs, and availability. Additionally, Sherwood offers CBA's on-site in light manufacturing, industrial kitchen service and, coming soon, computer cleaning and rehabilitation.
An assessment is given to identify devices that will increase communication and productivity. Training is offered to the job seeker and then to the business, once employment has been secured. In addition, job seekers have the opportunity to use computer and other training resources to gain a competitive edge in the job market.
There are three unique tracks available for job seekers. Job Search 101 focuses on the basics of job seeking. Each job seeker will be given a flash drive containing essential information to begin a job hunt. Technology and the Workplace explores how technology can be used in the job seeking process and Advanced Job Seeking will give job seekers the opportunity to meet with employers, participate in job fairs and use the flash drive to maintain and document the job search as well as prepare for the first day of employment.
Job seekers work with Employment Specialists and Job Developers to identify and apply for jobs that fall in general interest areas. Assistance is given in identifying job openings, applying for positions, job carving, interviewing and employer support during and following the hiring process.
An Employment Specialist provides 1:1 support is given to train the new employee and offer support and information to the employer at the worksite. The Employment Specialist decreases on-site support as the employee gains skill and proficiency on the job.
Program participants have access to assessments and services that identify adaptive devices or technology that increases and maintains productivity in the workplace. Employers and caregivers also receive training and support to encourage interaction in the workplace.
Employees who successfully complete their probationary employment period are given assistance as needed to apply for new jobs, increase their job responsibilities and seek wage increases. An Employment Specialist works with both the employer and the employee to facilitate the application.
A training and support center is available to any job seeker enrolled at Sherwood Community Services. A computer is available for online job searches and applications. Other materials include books, pamphlets, and applications for low to no cost cell phones. Additional resources will be added pending availability of funds.
Social Enterprises:
A line of all natural pet treats is produced and marketed under the name It's ALL Good for Pets. Job seekers are paid minimum wage while they learn to prepare, package and market products under the brand label. Additional products and services are currently under consideration.
