What is assistive technology?

Assistive technology is a general term that refers to assistive, adapted and rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities. It includes any device or special adaptation that increases, maintains or improves a person's ability to participate in daily activities such as recreation, self-care tasks, communication and employment. Assistive technology promotes greater independence by allowing people to perform tasks or participate in activities that may not otherwise be available to them.

Examples of assistive technology

  • Visual schedules for someone who has difficulty remembering specific tasks or important events
  • Adapted toys or household items for a person with limited mobility or hand control
  • Voice recognition software or a keyboard with large type for someone who has trouble using a computer
  • A voice output device for a person who has difficulty speaking
  • What is the TechSTEP program?

    TechSTEP is a support, education and training program. Our services aim at helping parents, caregivers and professionals assess assistive technology needs for people of all ages. Our goal is promote independence and help make people's everyday lives easier. We provide innovative assistive technology resources and training in an effort to meet the needs of our community.

    TechSTEP Services

  • Speech and occupational therapy
  • TechSTEP provides OT, SLP and SLPA services with professionals trained and experienced in assistive technology.

  • Assistive technology assessments
  • The TechSTEP staff is available to assist parents, caregivers and professionals assess assistive technology needs for people of all ages.

  • Lending Library
  • Our Lending Library provides short term assistive equipment, adapted toy and adapted book loans to library members.

  • Computer Lab and Resource Center
  • The TechSTEP computer lab is available for Lending Library members to try available software and a variety of computer access devices.

  • Communication groups
  • Our communication groups are geared toward children and adults with communication challenges. Group sessions are designed to practice communication and social skills in order to increase self confidence, independence and community involvement. Participants are given the opportunity to practice skills such as social greetings, initiating and maintaining conversation, expressing emotion, listening skills, awareness of body proximity, negotiating, etc. We welcome people of all levels of ability with or without augmentative communication devices.

  • Individual and group training
  • The TechSTEP staff is available to lead individual and group assistive technology training for parents, caregivers and professionals.

  • Classes and workshops
  • TechSTEP provides a variety of classes to support family members, caregivers and professionals.

  • Equipment programming, fabrication, and fitting
